Faculty Reserves

What you need to put items on reserve

  • Fill out the Reserve Request Form (online) or the Reserve Request Form (PDF) for every course each semester (don’t forget to sign it!).
  • Complete bibliographic citation for each item you are placing on reserve.
  • Books, DVDs, and other library materials. Library staff will pull items from the stacks for your reserve list.
  • Personal items you wish to put on reserve including clean, clear photocopies of articles or chapters.
  • To add student papers or projects, use the Student Coursework Consent Form.
  • Electronic copies of reserve material.

When and where to bring in reserve requests

  • Bring request forms and materials to the Reinsch Library Circulation Desk or the Ballston Coakley Library Extension any time during regular hours.
  • Allow three working days for reserves to be available for your students. Note: Processing course reserves may take longer at the beginning of the semester.

What can be put on reserve

  • Books and other materials from the library’s collection. Contact your library liaison to request a RUSH order if Marymount does not own a copy.
  • Personal books, DVDs, photocopies, and other reserves supplied by you. (While the library makes every effort to safeguard your personal items, we cannot be responsible for replacing lost or damaged items.)
  • Homework solutions; practice or sample tests or exams.
  • Media such as DVDs, slides, and CDs.
  • Files in GIF, JPEG, HTML, PDF, and Word documents can be posted on your Canvas site.
  • There is no specific limit to the number of items that can be placed on reserve.

Copyright

Faculty members are responsible for making sure you are in compliance with the Copyright Law of the United States for anything you place on reserve. For more information, you may refer to the Marymount University Copyright Policy. Also, see our Help Guide on Fair Use and Copyright in the Classroom.

In general, that means the copy should:

  • Be a brief portion of an entire work, e.g., an article from a journal, one chapter from a book, one short story from a collection.
  • Be used only one semester if you have not obtained permission from the copyright holder.
  • Be used for more than one semester ONLY if the faculty member has obtained and provided permission to do so from the copyright holder.
  • Be used for educational purposes only.
  • Not be consumable–such as an exercise book or workbook.
  • Comply with off-air recording guidelines for audio/visual materials.
  • To be in copyright compliance, library staff cannot provide photocopying assistance for reserve material.

Removing Items on reserve

  • At the end of the semester, your personal copies will be available for you to pick up, and Marymount items will be re-shelved.
