Scholars Programs

Marymount University provides unique scholars opportunities for students who are seeking challenging academic experiences.

Students should apply to the scholars programs online. Some programs may consider current MU applicants in addition to incoming students. Incoming students must be admitted to MU to be eligible for admission to the scholars programs.

The MU Scholars Program application deadline is April 1 for all programs. Some programs may accept applications after the deadline. Please check the application to see which programs are still be accepting applications.

Global Scholars

The Marymount University Global Scholars Program offers motivated students in all disciplines the opportunity to expand their global perspective through a variety of unique and dynamic intercultural learning opportunities. Global Scholars will explore global issues and develop their intercultural competency through focused coursework, guided research, language proficiency, and global learning experiences. Global Scholars form a distinct community of learners at Marymount. Their exposure to diverse intercultural experiences will help them develop the skills and knowledge needed for success in the global marketplace.

Honors Program

Answer

The Honors Program is comprised of a diverse community of students seeking academic challenges and opportunities to enhance their college experience. All academic schools are represented within the program, and students from all majors are encouraged to apply to the program. The Honors Program encourages students to become independent, critical thinkers. It challenges them intellectually and promotes academic excellence on campus.

Admission to the program is very competitive. Applicants should have at least a 3.50 unweighted high school GPA.

Honors Program applicants must submit one essay response and one academic writing sample from previous coursework. Additionally, all Honors Program applicants must submit two letters of recommendation written by teachers and others qualified to comment on academic performance.

Admission to the university and meeting the minimum Honors Program requirements, do not guarantee admission to the Honors Program.

Spirit of Service Scholars

Marymount University strives to foster in its students a spirit of service to others, a concern for social justice, and a commitment to living in an ethically responsible way. The Spirit of Service Scholars Program is open to students who have met high academic standards and have an outstanding record of volunteer service activities in their high school, church, and/or community agencies.

This competitive scholars program is available to students with a high record of academic achievement and extensive volunteer service experience with school, church, or community organizations. Recipients are expected to maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and must complete 60 hours of community service per semester. Spirit of Service scholars receive a $2,500 scholarship annually.

Counseling Scholars Program

If you are interested in the field of Counseling and have a strong academic profile, Marymount’s Counseling Scholars Program offers you an opportunity to guarantee your place in the university’s graduate Counseling MA programs. The Counseling Scholars Program is open to a select group of incoming first-year and transfer students who are chosen by the Counseling Admissions Committee and must meet specific continuation requirements.

To be accepted into the program, first-year and transfer students must have:

  • A high school grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or above
  • Declared psychology as their major
  • Completed the essay portion of the Scholars Program application addressing their interest and commitment to the field of Counseling (500-word minimum)

To be accepted into the program, current students must have: 

  • A college grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 or above in their psychology courses
  • Completed the essay portion of the Counseling Scholars application addressing your interest and commitment to the field of Counseling (500-word minimum)

To continue in the program, a student must:

  • Maintain an overall GPA of 3.2 in their psychology courses
  • Complete designated psychology courses
  • Complete a counseling-oriented research project and internship
  • Attend at least 2 Counseling Department events

Forensic and Legal Psychology (FLP) Scholars

If you are interested in the field of Forensic and Legal Psychology (FLP) and have a strong academic profile, Marymount’s Forensic Scholars Program offers you an opportunity to guarantee your place in the university’s graduate Forensic and Legal Psychology program. While other undergraduates will need to apply to the graduate program, qualifying criminal justice or psychology majors who are Forensic Scholars are exempt from this process. The Forensic Scholars Program is open to a select group of current and incoming transfer and first-year students who are chosen by the Forensic Admissions Committee and must meet stringent continuation requirements.

To be accepted into the program, an incoming first-year student must have:

  • A high school grade point average (GPA) of 3.3 or above
  • Completed the essay portion of the Scholars Program application addressing their interest and commitment to the field of Forensic and Legal Psychology (500-word minimum)

To be accepted into the program, a transfer or current student must have:

  • A cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above in all previous/existing undergraduate coursework
  • An average GPA of 3.5 or above in previous/existing psychology and/or criminal justice coursework
  • Completed the essay portion of the Scholars Program application addressing their interest and commitment to the field of Forensic and Legal Psychology (500-word minimum)

To continue in the program, a student must:

  • Maintain an overall GPA of 3.5
  • Complete designated criminal justice and psychology courses
  • Complete a forensic-oriented research project and internship
  • Attend at least 2 Forensic and Legal Psychology Department events
  • Attend at least 1 meeting of a Forensic and Legal Psychology MA Course

Interested students are advised to apply as soon as possible. For current students, the application and all additional materials must be submitted no later than the end of the first semester of the applicant’s junior year.

Physical Therapy (PT) Scholars

Answer

This competitive program guarantees admission into the Physical Therapy (PT) doctoral program. This program is open to incoming first-year and transfer applicants. Students, admitted by the PT Admissions Committee, must meet stringent acceptance and continuation requirements. To be accepted into the program, a student must have

  • A high school grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or above
  • A high school mathematics and science GPA of 3.5 or above
  • 3 years of high school science (chemistry, biology, and physics preferred)
  • 3 years of high school mathematics
  • 4 years of high school English

To continue in the program, a student must

  • Maintain an overall GPA of 3.5
  • Maintain a prerequisite GPA of 3.5
  • Demonstrate active involvement in the greater Marymount community
  • Complete 40 hours of observation or volunteer service work in a physical therapy clinical setting, verified by a physical therapist from the clinical setting. These hours may be completed at more than one clinical facility
  • Obtain a letter of recommendation from a faculty member in the student’s academic major
  • Maintain communication with PT department faculty liaison
  • Complete Physical Therapy Centralized Application System (PTCAS) online application by the established deadline

Decisions regarding general undergraduate admission to the university and admission to the PT Scholars Program are made independently.

STEM Scholars

Answer

The STEM Citizen Science Scholars Program is designed for undergraduate students in biology, biochemistry, computer science, cybersecurity, engineering, or information technology majors. This program is only available to U.S. citizens.

To be admitted into the program, first-year students must:

  • Declare biology, biochemistry, computer science, cybersecurity, engineering, or information technology as their major
  • Have a high school grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or above
  • Demonstrate financial need (PELL eligibility) as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Demonstrate academic potential in their chosen field

The STEM Citizen Scholars Program provides annual scholarship funding for students up to $40,000 over the course of their four years at Marymount, based on financial need. Program highlights:

  • Work with students from other STEM disciplines to solve real-world scientific problems
  • Serve your local community while learning important STEM principles
  • Receive mentoring from STEM faculty and Marymount alumni
  • Develop skills that will help you secure a job or grad school position in your chosen field
