Association for Computing Machinery
The Association for Computer Machinery chapter is a group of students with diverse backgrounds who share a common interest in computers. A major focus of the chapter is the annual ACM Programming Contest, where universities send three-person teams to programming competitions throughout the world. Marymount University has routinely hosted the regional competition each fall, with teams from The George Washington University, the University of Virginia, James Madison University, Hood College, and Catholic University in attendance.
STEM
Information Technology students may participate in the activities of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) group on campus, together with Mathematics and Biology majors. This includes trips to local government offices, businesses, lectures, and presentations.
Honor Society
Upsilon Pi Epsilon is an international honorary society whose membership consists of outstanding undergraduate and graduate students in computing and information disciplines.
Members are chosen not only for their scholastic achievement in a computing science program, but also for distinguishing themselves as true professionals by meeting the standards of the society. Membership is limited to those who can effectively achieve the original goals of the society, which include
The recognition of outstanding talent in the field of computing science, The promotion of high scholarship in computing science, The establishment and maintenance of high standards in computing science, The representation of computing science in interdisciplinary communications, and The encouragement of individual contributions to society through computing science. Dr. Diane Murphy is the advisor for Marymount’s UPE chapter.
Dean’s List
The Dean’s List recognizes students who achieve a level of academic excellence. Students must carry at least 12 credit hours, obtain a GPA of 3.4, and be in good academic standing during a given semester in order to receive this honor.
