Cultural Programs & Events
Marymount University and the International Student Services Office (ISS) are committed to a student-centered learning community that values diversity. ISS strives to further global awareness through a wide variety of intercultural and educational programs for the University community, these programs give an opportunity for students to share their rich cultures and be engaged in the University community.
The following are a few of the major programs supported by the ISS office:
International Student Session
International students attend an orientation session designed to help students learn about and understand the U.S. education system. Students also gain knowledge of the resources available at Marymount in order for them to succeed and do well in their course of study. Students receive advice on cultural adjustments as they become more aware of immigration regulations in order to maintain their status.
International Welcome Reception
At the beginning of each semester, ISS and International Club sponsor an International Welcome Reception. New and returning students join together, enjoy international food, and learn about upcoming cultural programs and opportunities.
Weekly Coffee Hour
The International Club is open to international and domestic students who are interested in learning about other cultures. This is a fun and exciting opportunity for students to learn and make new friends. Students meet every Friday in the Gerard Hall Lobby, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Students are involved in a variety of country presentations and different discussions about cultural traditions and differences. The club members also organize multiple activities and events throughout the year, which are open to the Marymount community. Field trips to Washington, DC, provide a multitude of opportunities to partake in the diverse cultural activities year round.
International Education Week
Marymount participates in the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education initiative to celebrate International Education Week during November. It is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. The week is also meant to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.
International Thanksgiving Dinner
This large event is cosponsored with Campus Ministry and International Club. This program is an opportunity for students from abroad to experience a major American holiday tradition. Students come together and share a traditional turkey dinner along with a twist of some international flavors.
International Week is a time to celebrate the springtime and the diversity at Marymount. During this week, students can participate in several events that will give them the opportunity for cultural appreciation and understanding. These events include the country fair, interfaith panel, and going global with your career.
Semi-Formal International Banquet
A popular event includes an exciting evening with a delicious exotic buffet, unique cultural performances, and a colorful fashion show featuring traditional attire from around the world. Proceeds go to charitable organizations.
