MU ALERT ISSUED

Healthier Campus Initiative

Marymount University is proud to announce its three-year commitment to the Healthier Campus Initiative (HCI), which will expand healthier options on campus through its collaboration with Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA) – a leading organization working with the private sector to ensure that all students have the opportunity to live healthy, active lives.

Habits that students form during college, including what they eat and how much physical activity they get, can last a lifetime. Nationally, 95% of college students fail to eat the recommended amount of fruits and veggies and more than 60% report not getting enough physical activity.

With this in mind, the Office of Wellness, Prevention and Education teamed up with Campus Dining, Athletics, and other departments to bring the Healthier Campus Initiative (HCI) to Marymount. HCI is made up 23 guidelines that are designed to create a culture shift towards greater health and wellness among the campus community. The goal of these changes is to create an environment that encourages and supports greater physical activity and healthier eating habits for all students, staff, and faculty.

Some examples of the 23 guidelines we will be working on throughout the next 3 years are:

  • Providing a marked walking route on campus that is at least 2 miles in length
  • Offering a comparable plant-based food option at every platform that is serving meat
  • Implementing a program that identifies students who may be food insecure and provides options on campus
  • and more!
