Scope of Clinical Services

SCS  utilizes a brief therapy model to help students resolve and/or successfully manage specific concerns  or achieve a desired change in support of their academic and personal goals.  Our services are goal directed and time limited (up to 12 sessions per year).   This model is well suited for students who are experiencing  difficulties related to:

  • Self-esteem and self-confidence
  • Adjusting to college
  • Abuse (physical, sexual, emotional, mental, spiritual, etc.)
  • Relationship issues
  • Family issues
  • Stress management and coping skills
  • Time management
  • Academic concerns
  • Assertiveness
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Eating concerns and body image
  • Grief and loss
  • Identity issues
  • Substance abuse and dependence
  • Veterans' Affairs, Military Personnel, and/or Military family issues

SCS will see any student in need of services for an initial consultation.  However, if a client is experiencing a problem that requires a longer or more intensive therapeutic experience than can be provided by SCS, the counselor will provide the student with the names and contact information of several referrals to community agencies and/or private practitioners.  Given that counselors have an ethical and legal responsibility to ensure that their clients receive treatment that is appropriate (in terms of frequency, intensity, duration, and/or specialization), a referral may be provided prior to the point at which clients exhaust their allotted number of sessions.  It is the responsibility of the client to schedule appointments with their selected treatment providers in the community and to make payments for services that are rendered.
