March 30 - COVID-19 Update (March 30, 2020)

Dear Marymount Community,

It’s the beginning of another week where we are teaching, learning and working remotely – but hopefully today’s bright and sunny weather is a sign of good things on the horizon!

Please see below for our latest announcements regarding COVID-19’s continued impact on campus:

Stay at Home Order
Today, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam issued a statewide Stay at Home order to mitigate the spread of the virus. This order directs all Virginians to stay home, except in extremely limited circumstances. Individuals may leave their residence for allowable travel, including to seek medical attention, work, care for family or household members, obtain goods and services like groceries and prescriptions and engage in outdoor activity with strict social distancing requirements. Here at Marymount, our COVID-19 Task Force has been working ahead of this announcement to ensure we are fully compliant with the order. For more info from the Governor’s office, click here.

Health and Well-Being for Students, Staff and Faculty
Students – please click here for the first edition of Student Affairs’ virtual events calendar. We will be sending weekly calendars with the COVID-19 email update every Monday. We hope you will join us in these fun, helpful and connecting activities while we learn and work remotely.

Staff and Faculty – the COVID-19 Staff & Faculty Well-Being Committee has created a survey to assess our community’s needs. With this information, we hope to create and share content to help and uplift. Please fill out this survey to let us know what’s on your mind and how we can help support you!

2020 Annual Student Research Conference (SRC)
Even though the in-person conference scheduled for April 22 cannot take place, we are creating a virtual site to display these scholarly projects. The virtual site will host narrated poster or slide presentations, and be shared broadly with the MU community. All student presenters have been informed of the change in format and have until April 15 to confirm their intent to participate.

Annual Faculty-Student Research Fellowship Program
The summer student Discover Research Fellowship Program will be held in Summer 2020, with all projects completed through remote collaboration and mentorship. The current 2020 database of faculty research projects is now live. Faculty have until April 2 to add a project to the current list. Students have until April 20 to review the faculty projects and submit an application. See the Discover Summer Research Program webpage for more information and application links.

Highlights in the Media
After sharing the story of our Malek School of Health Professions donating critical PPE to the Virginia Hospital Center, the good deed was mentioned by The Washington PostInsideNoVa.comWDVM-TV and the Arlington Catholic Herald in their ongoing coronavirus coverage. Way to make Marymount proud!

Lastly, I want to also give a special shout-out to our faculty in the Biology & Physical Sciences Department who donated gloves and safety goggles to Emerson Clinical Research Institute. Click here for more info.

The CEO of the Institute is Dr. Fabian Sandoval, a Marymount alumnus, and he’s also spreading the word about our Student Emergency Fund and encouraging others to donate. It’s great to see the entire Marymount community coming together and helping our fellow Saints, and I’m excited to see this continue!

Sincerely,
