Last month, the global humanitarian relief and development organization Helping Hand for Relief and Development (HHRD) recognized with gratitude its partnership with Marymount University in facilitating the education of those less fortunate around the world.

In May, the University donated four truckloads of old residence hall furniture, worth approximately $15,000 combined, to the charity organization. It was then shipped to children’s schools across Africa, Pakistan, Central America and certain locations in the U.S. to provide educational support and the infrastructure necessary to create a thriving learning environment.

HHRD works globally in 85 nations, with a special focus in countries where the majority of the population is living below the poverty line. With warehouses located across the U.S., the charity can respond to human suffering from emergency and disaster situations around the world. In addition to emergency relief efforts for natural and manmade disasters, HHRD works on long-term relief and development programs, including the support of orphan children centers.

The mass donation in May wasn’t the first time Marymount contributed to HHRD’s efforts. In 2016, as the University razed the old Ballston building and began construction on new modern facilities, thousands of dollars’ worth of furniture and computer hardware was no longer needed. To ensure they didn’t go to waste, University staff collected and donated computer lab furniture and classroom technology, as well as faculty and staff office furniture, to the local HHRD coordinator in order to give back to humanity as a whole.
