Course Evaluations

Marymount's course evaluation process is conducted online through Canvas using a course evaluation software called EvaluationKIT.

The Course Evaluation Process

  • Course evaluations open three weeks before the last day of classes
  • Course evaluations close the last day of classes
  • Reports are available generally within one week following the deadline for submission of grades to the Registrar

Before the Start of Course Evaluations

Instructors will receive an email about one week prior to the start of the course evaluation period. The email will include information about the opening and closing dates of the course evaluation window, as well as tips to encourage student participation. Instructors will receive another reminder email on the morning of the start of the course evaluation period.

Starting in Fall 2019, course instructors and/or program administrators will be able to add a small number of custom questions to the main university course evaluation.
How to add custom questions to course evaluations

During the Course Evaluation Period

  • Checking Response Rates: Instructors may check the current response rate for each of their courses at any time during the course evaluation period by logging in to Canvas and accessing the EvaluationKIT module on their course homepage. This will take you to your instructor dashboard which features a real-time response rate tracker for each course. For more information about logging in to and using EvaluationKIT on Canvas, please read the Quick Start Guide for Faculty.
  • Encouraging Participation: Instructors can find tips for increasing course evaluation responses rates here.

After the Course Evaluation Period Ends

  • Accessing Reports: Once you have submitted your final grades, you'll receive an email within one week following the deadline for submitting grades to the Registrar notifying you that your reports are available. You may click on the link in the email or access reports directly through the EvaluationKIT module on your course homepage in Canvas. For help in accessing your reports, please read Instructor: How to Access Your Course Evaluation Results.

Resources for Faculty

Faculty FAQs
Get answers to frequently-asked questions about your course evaluations and EvaluationKit.

What courses are evaluated?

Answer
As a matter of policy, the university evaluates all courses but provides exceptions for courses identified by the school dean for which the standard course evaluation instrument might not be appropriate. For example, courses that deans have asked us to exempt from evaluation include independent study, internship, project, and research courses. Also, regardless of the course type, sections with fewer than three enrolled students (unless cross-listed with another larger section) do not get evaluated out of concern for the protection of student privacy.

What evaluation form is used?

Answer
This is the same Marymount course evaluation instrument that we have used since Fall 2013. There have been no changes to the university course evaluation.

You can view the current course evaluation instrument here.

When are course evaluation results available?

Answer
Your evaluation results are available generally within a week following the deadline for course grade submission at the end of the semester. You'll receive an email notification letting you know that your reports are available in EvaluationKIT. You can access the reports by clicking on the link in the email or by access EvaluationKIT through Canvas.

How can I access my evaluation results?

Answer
You can access your course evaluation results at any time after results have been released by logging in to EvaluationKIT through Canvas. You will receive an email notification letting you know that your reports are available; you can either click on the link in the email or by log on to Canvas. This guide will give you step-by-step instructions.

What if I need assistance?

Answer
Contact us at assess@marymount.edu or call us during office hours (9:00am -- 5:00pm) at (703) 284-5748.

I'm a Department Chair. How do I see results for my department?

Answer

You can access the reports for the department as a whole or by individual instructor or course section -- or download all of your results as a batch -- by logging into EvaluationKIT from your Canvas account. This guide will show you how.

If you need access to additional courses outside of your department (e.g., related to specific program), we recommend that you first contact your school dean, who has the authority to download the EvaluationKIT results from all school departments and at their discretion send you reports for specific courses. Contact the Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness (assess@marymount.edu) as an alternative or if you need further assistance.

How can I see my past course evaluation results?

Answer
You can see all of your past course evaluation results for courses evaluated since we started using EvaluationKIT in Fall 2018 by logging into EvaluationKIT from your Canvas account. You can log in to EK by clicking on any past course in Canvas (starting Fall 2018) or by clicking on Account (located in the top left hand corner of your Canvas screen), then "Settings," then "Course Evaluations." More information and screenshots showing how to do this are available in this guide.

If you need to see course evaluation results for courses prior to Fall 2018, contact the Office of Planning and Institutional Effectiveness (assess@marymount.edu).
