Prior to joining the Marymount faculty, Dr. Michael Bolton served in various assignments in law enforcement, including crime scene processing, police training, youth gang activities, and hostage negotiations. During this time, he received the Arlington County Police Department’s Meritorious Action Award for his role in the arrest of a violent sexual predator who is now serving two life sentences.

Dr. Bolton has assisted in various capacities with myriad law enforcement and mental health agencies, such as the Justice Department, FBI, U.S. Secret Service, Virginia State Police, International Association of Chiefs of Police, and the National Mental Health Association.

Active in research and scholarship, Dr. Bolton routinely presents papers at national conferences in criminal justice/criminology and public administration and policy. Moreover, his publications appear in periodicals such as Public Administration Review, Criminal Justice Review, Journal of Criminal Justice Education, Law Enforcement Executive Forum, Critical Criminology, and The Journal on Excellence in College Teaching.

His twin passions are teaching and cycling. Most summers he can be found tooling along country roads in rural Virginia and West Virginia, upstate New York, New England, and Nova Scotia.
