Frequently Asked Questions

Throughout our tenure, we have found that many of you will have questions surrounding the NSTAR process. Take a look below to see if we can answer any questions you may have.

What if I can’t come on any of the NSO dates?

Email the Orientation Office or call (703) 284-5706 immediately for further information.

What should I do if I can’t attend the NSO I signed up for?

Email the Orientation Office or call (703) 284-5706 immediately. Otherwise the schedule you create will be deleted from the system.

Does it matter which orientation session I attend?

No, it does not matter. Your schedule will be saved for you as long as you attend an orientation session.

How do I complete my DSP?

Budget a minimum of 30 minutes to sit at a computer and concentrate. Have your high school GPA and SAT or ACT scores handy. You’ll be asked for them along the way.

Do I have to complete the DSP placement section all at once during the DSP process?

You can stop the process and log back in later. All of your decisions will be saved.

What can I do if I have questions about my DSP choices?

You will be given specific instructions and explanations about your choices and the recommendations on the site. You will also have the opportunity to email advisors in The Center for Teaching and Learning with your questions. They will answer you within 24 hours Monday through Friday.

What should I do if I have technical problems during this process?

Contact the Center for Teaching and Learning at (703) 526-6935, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., if you experience technical problems. Also, be sure to use Internet Explorer or Firefox when completing DSP.

What happens after I choose my English course?

Once you have chosen your English course, you will be given guidelines for making a fall schedule of classes. You will see a list of required and recommended first-semester courses based on your major, and will be directed to Marynet, where you will be able to access the schedule of classes, select your classes, and register.

Are there any deadlines for completing DSP, creating my schedule, and registering?

Yes, there are deadlines for different stages of the process.

We ask that you complete the DSP prior to May 20. However, you must complete your DSP choices before you attend NSO in June.

You can pick your courses and plan your schedule as soon as you complete your DSP, but you cannot register for your classes online until May 30. Online registration will open for freshmen May 30 – June 13. Remember, you won’t be able to register until you have done your DSP.

What happens if I don’t complete my DSP by May 30?

If you complete your DSP on or after May 30, you will have a 24-hour waiting period before you can register on Marynet. By completing your DSP prior to May 30, you will have a better chance of getting your first-choice class times and sections.

What happens if I don’t complete DSP or register by June 13?

You still need to complete your DSP before your orientation session, but will be unable to prepare your own schedule once online registration ends June 13. Based on your DSP choices, we will prepare a schedule and register you for fall classes following the typical first semester courses for your major. You will be given this schedule when you come to NSO.

I have generated my student account, registered for an orientation session, and completed my Directed Self-Placement. Now, what do I do?

Once you have completed these items, the next step is to register for classes. Class registration is open May 30 – June 13. Prior to May 30, you can browse classes and even list them as “preferred” in your Marynet account. Just remember, you’re not enrolled in them until you register.

Log in to Marynet, select Marynet for Students > Register for Sections. In the options, select “Search and Register for Classes.” You can use this option if you would like to look for sections, add them to your preferred list of sections, and later register for them. For more information on registering for classes, see the Office of the Registrar.

What if I want to change my major or my schedule after I register?

If you want to change your schedule after you have registered, fill out and submit this Contact Form and an advisor can assist you. You can also change your schedule with an advisor when you come to NSO.
