Meet FYE Staff
Dr. Yolanda Gibson, Associate Dean of First Year Experience
Yolanda oversees academic advising for all first year students and coordinates the seminar classes, DISCOVER 101 First-Year Seminar and DISCOVER 201 Transfer Student Experience, which introduces students to active learning and student engagement. In addition, she is responsible for coordinating and facilitating efforts across the university to provide a unified approach to interventions aimed at increasing retention and success rates of first year students.
Dr. Gibson has worked in higher education for over a decade holding previous positions as Director of Alumni Relations (Marymount University), Director of the Student Success Center at the University of the District of Columbia’s Community College, Director of Campus & Community Relations at Northern Virginia Community College (Alexandria Camps), Academic Coordinator at George Washington University’s Graduate Center, and adjunct professor at both NOVA and UDC-CC.
Dr. Gibson earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Marymount University in Communication Studies and Business Administration, a Master of Arts degree in Community College Teaching and Doctor of Arts degree in Higher Education Administration from George Mason University (VA).
Tyler Beckett, Academic Advisor

Tyler Beckett serves as the Academic Advisor for students in the School of Arts and Sciences. Tyler earned his Bachelor of Arts in English at Lee University in Cleveland, TN, and his Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, Fiction at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. Tyler is an eldest child, which perhaps explains why he's made a career out of telling other people what to do. He spent three years as a freshman advisor at Old Dominion University before coming to Marymount, and he's enjoying splitting his time between Virginia and DC.
Andrea Miller, Academic Advisor
School of Business and Technology, Undeclared Freshmen, and Undeclared Transfer Students
Andrea earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Development and a Master of Arts in Counseling from Oakland University in southeast Michigan. She has 10 years experience advising students and is dedicated to a career in higher education. In her spare time, she enjoys being outdoors, volunteering for various non-profits, cooking and traveling.
Haley Shows, Senior Academic Advisor
School of Science, Education, and Mathematics
Haley serves as the Senior Academic Advisor for students in the School of Science, Mathematics, and Education. Haley earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Louisiana at Monroe in 2008. She continued pursuing her passion for helping others by earning a Master of Science in Mental Health and School Counseling. Haley is a Nationally Certified Counselor and loves using her skills and knowledge to reach others. For the past 3 years, Haley has worked for Louisiana State University (LSU) as a Recruiter and Academic Counselor. There, Haley helped recruit and retain the largest and most diverse incoming Freshman class in LSU history. She served on various advisory committees for recruitment and retention, and helped lead a student Ambassador group whom provided outreach service to current students as well as the community of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Haley is excited to join the Marymount family! Her passion has always been in advising and helping students reach their full potential. When she is not having fun at work, like any Louisiana native, she enjoys a great glass of sweet tea and a football game!
Courtney Smith, Administrative Assistant, First Year Experience
Courtney Smith serves as the Administrative Assistant for the office of First Year Experience. Courtney earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science Degrees in Criminal Justice at University of Baltimore (UB) in Baltimore, Maryland. While earning her degrees, Courtney worked in the Center for Student Involvement at UB and developed a love for student affairs, student involvement, and all things Higher Ed.
