Fall 2020 Social Distancing Classroom Protocols

Each course’s Canvas page will display a link to a student support site that includes important information such as technology requirements, continued use of Canvas, and conduct and behavioral expectations in online or hybrid courses. You are encouraged to review this site prior to the start of classes.

Social distancing requirements are in effect in all campus areas, including classrooms. If you are enrolled in a course with a face-to-face component, please note the following rules and updates:

  • Start and end times for courses (excluding nursing lab and simulation courses and physical therapy courses) will be staggered to minimize the number of people in hallways, bathrooms, and other common areas as follows:
    • Main Campus: Courses held in classrooms that have numbers ending in 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 (even numbers) will start and end at the top (:00) and bottom (:30) of the hour. Courses held in classrooms that have numbers ending in 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 (odd numbers) will start and end at the quarter (:15) and three-quarter (:45) hour. For example, if your course is scheduled in GAIL G114 from 8:00am-9:15am, your class will meet in the classroom from 8:00am-9:00am. If your course is scheduled in ROWL G205 from 8:00am-9:15am, your class will meet in the classroom from 8:15am-9:15am.  A table is available for you to use as a guideline.
    • Ballston: Courses held in classrooms that have numbers ending in 0, 4, and 8 will start and end at the top (:00) and bottom (:30) of the hour. Courses held in classrooms that have numbers ending in 2, 6, or any odd number, will start and end at the quarter (:15) and three-quarter (:45) hour. For example, if your course is scheduled in BALL 3010 from 8:45am-10:00am, your class will meet in the classroom from 9:00am-10:00am. If your course is scheduled in BALL 3046 from 8:45am-10:00am, your class will meet in the classroom from 8:45am-9:45am. A table is available for you to use as a guideline.
    • Courses that meet once per week will follow the schedule outlined above (i.e. if a course is scheduled in BALL 6034 from 3:30-6:15, the class will meet in the classroom from 3:30-6:00. If a course is scheduled in BALL 5012 from 3:30-6:15, the class will meet in the classroom from 3:45-6:15). A table is available for you to use as a guideline.
    • Physical therapy students are expected to follow the schedule put forth by the department of physical therapy for classes held at 4040 Fairfax Drive.
  • Students enrolled in hybrid courses will generally not meet in-person for every scheduled class session. Please monitor your course Canvas pages and your MU email for important announcements from your instructor regarding when you are scheduled to report for in-person instruction. Only report to your classroom on the days and times you have been assigned.
  • Students may not attend courses for which they are not registered. If you register during the add/drop period, refrain from attending in-person classes until you have confirmed your assigned day and time with your instructor.
  • Special social distancing protocols will be in place for nursing labs and simulations and physical therapy courses. Please refer to these programs for more information.
  • All classes and final exams after Thanksgiving will be remote.

Please continue to monitor your Canvas page and MU email for important announcements from your instructors.
