Program Requirements

Major Requirements

To fulfill the requirements of the major, all students in this program will take the following coursework in a sequence determined in collaboration with a faculty advisor. All students also must fulfill Liberal Arts Core and University requirements, and some of the following courses may also satisfy those requirements.

  • EN 200 Elements of Literary Study
  • EN 290 Literary Theory and Practice or EN 240 Introduction to Visual and Cultural Studies
  • EN 400 Internship or CMD 400 Internship
  • EN 424 Senior Seminar or CMD 404 Performance Media Lab

All majors also complete coursework in a chosen Track. Majors can choose from Literature, Writing, Media & Performance Studies, or Secondary Education Licensure.  Learn about our Tracks of study here!

Minor Requirements (Effective Fall 2017)

An English minor can enhance and complement study in a variety of areas, especially communications, history, political science, business, and psychology. However, students can choose to complete a minor in English regardless of their fields of study. Students majoring in Liberal Studies can also choose English as a concentration. All minors take 18 credits in English: 

  • EN 200 Elements of Literary Study 
  • EN 290 Literary Theory and Practice 
  • Six credits from EN 201 through EN 230
  • Six credits from EN courses numbered 321 or above


Students who meet honors requirements are eligible for membership in the international English Honor Society, Sigma Tau Delta.
