Discover Writing

One way students learn how to learn is through writing. As writing guru William Zinsser once remarked, “Writing is thinking on paper.” Mastering this process requires attention and practice.

At Marymount, students join a community of accomplished and apprentice scholars all engaged in exploring ideas through writing. They tailor prose for different audiences and different purposes. Even for the most experienced and confident writers, it’s hard — but worthwhile — work. Like other inquiry exercises, writing assignments deepen students’ understanding of both self and world.

In partnership with the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE), the DISCOVER program supports writing across the curriculum and in the disciplines. We encourage students to write outside class as well—everything from application essays to articles for publication. Resources for students and faculty include reference material, workshops, and consultation with a staff writing specialist, Sylvia Whitman.
