Otago Exercise Program

What is it?

 

The Otago Exercise Program is a home-based, individually tailored strength and balance program for frail older adults.  The program consists of a series of 17 strength and balance exercises delivered by a Physical Therapist for the first 8 weeks followed by self-management and monthly phone calls for a year.  Participants engage in exercise three times a week for 30 minutes and walk at least twice a week.   

How to Otago Exercise Program Leaders get certified?


Certification for the Otago Exercise Program is completed through  an online training course. This online course in falls prevention was developed as a means to train physical therapists, physical therapy assistants and other healthcare providers to integrate the Otago Exercise Program as part of their practice. The course is open to anyone interested in learning more about the Otago Exercise Program including, but not limited to nurses, occupational therapists, administrators, and aides. The training is intended to be used in combination with the Otago Exercise Program Manual available as an attachment in this course. 


The online training takes about 3+ hours to complete and the cost for the course is $35.00

Is there funding available to cover the cost of the training? 


Marymount University has received a federal grant under the U.S. Administration on Aging-Administration for Community Living. Its major goal is to increase the number and reach of evidence-based falls prevention programs in the northern Virginia region. One way in which individuals can contribute to this goal is by getting trained in the Otago Exercise Program and implementing it within their practice or organization. 

In order to assist individuals and organizations in completing the certification, funding is available to cover the cost of the online course. 

To fulfill the requirements for the federal grant, to help show the benefits of older adults participating in evidence based falls prevention programs, and to better understand facilitators and barriers to successful implementation of the Otago Exercise Program in our community, we are asking PTs who participate in this funding opportunity to complete participant pre and post program reporting surveys.
 

How do I receive funding and complete the OTAGO Exercise Program online training?


If you are interested in completing the Otago Exercise Program training:
  1. Email the Training Coordinator at rto@marymount.edu with your request.
  2. You will receive an email with detailed instructions on how to register and a voucher code, which you will be able to use to redeem when registering for the training.
  3. You will be provided with an Otago Exercise Program start-up kit that will include helpful information and the grant reporting documents.
