Welcome to Marymount!

For those students new to Marymount University, welcome! For students who are returning, welcome back! We hope your summer was relaxing and energizing, and that you are ready for the coming academic year. Take advantage of these events to meet new friends or reconnect with fellow students:
 
Friday, August 23

First Year Student Move-in

3 p.m.
Color Group Reunion
Various Locations
Reunite with your Orientation Leaders and your fellow color group members from Orientation. From there you will join the rest of the Class of 2017 for Convocation.
 
4 p.m.
Convocation and Welcome Reception
Verizon Arena, Lee Center; and Gerard Dining Hall
Be part of the official opening of the new academic year at Convocation. Your family is welcome to attend and see you off to a great first year at Marymount. A Welcome Reception follows in the Gerard Dining Hall, with plenty of food and drink for all.
 
6:30 p.m.
Class of 2017 Mandatory Meeting
Verizon Arena, Lee Center
All students in the class of 2017 must attend this meeting. Important information will be discussed, including Marymount policies, procedures, and resources.
 
8 p.m.
Comedian Arvin Mitchell (Opening Act: Acacia Sears, acoustic guitarist)
Bernie’s, Lee Center
Arvin Mitchell’s clean comedic style along with his hilarious impressions have made him a hit for the college circuit and corporate engagements that include the Kentucky Derby Grand Gala Reception, the St. Louis Premiered of The Longest Year, and the Marshall Faulk Charity Extravaganza. He continues to hone his craft by working the comedy club circuit, including appearances on Comic Strip Live, Boston Comedy Club, Irvine Improv Room, The Laugh Factory, and The Comedy Story.

Share breakfast with the Peer Mentor and classmates from your DISCOVER 101 or 201 class. This is your chance to ask any questions before the start of class.

Volunteer Service Day, hosted by the Campus Ministry Association
Gerard Dining Hall
Join a great Marymount tradition! At the start of every academic year, members of the Marymount community, including students, faculty, and staff, fan out around Arlington to volunteer. You will go to an offsite location with your Discover 101 or 201 class and Peer Mentor to lend a hand. Be the change!

Alcohol EDU Make-Up Session

Alcohol EDU is an online alcohol prevention program used by more than 500 colleges and universities nationwide. All students are required to complete this session prior to the start of school.

We The Kings Concert
Lower Level Recreational Gym, Lee Center
We The Kings, an American rock group from Bradenton, Florida, just completed a worldwide tour with Canadian band Simple Plan and has performed across the United States as a main stage headliner on the Vans Warped Tour. Hit songs include the platinum single "Check Yes Juliet" and Top 40 singles "We'll Be A Dream" (featuring Demi Lovato) and "Heaven Can Wait." The band's latest release, Sunshine State of Mind, features the MTV Music Award winner for Most Innovative Music Video Of The Year for their interactive music video and song "Say You Like Me."

Alcohol EDU is an online alcohol prevention program used by more than 500 colleges and universities nationwide. All students are required to complete this session prior to the start of school.

Club Fair, Campus Tours, Shuttles to Target
Ireton Lawn (Rain site: Lower Level Recreational Gym, Lee Center)
There are more than 40 awesome student clubs and organizations at Marymount, and this is your chance to check them all out in one location. (If you can’t find one you like, you can start one!) There will also be guided campus tours, so you can become familiar with the campus layout. If you need to buy some personal items, hop on a free shuttle to Target.
 
1 -3 p.m.
Amazing Race, hosted by the Counseling Center
Ireton Lawn
A Marymount-themed Amazing Race, with a prize to the fastest team! Sign up at the Counseling Center table after the Club Fair to get your first clue. The Race kicks off at 1 p.m. and contestants (two per team) can start any time between 1 and 2:30 p.m.

Welcome Back Mass
Sacred Heart of Mary Chapel
Please join your fellow students at the first Mass of the school year.
 
8 p.m.
Welcome Back Party, hosted by Campus Ministry Association
Ireton Lawn
A party you don't want to miss! Celebrate the beginning of a new school year with free food and lawn games. Come out to eat, meet, and play!

Dollar Dinner, Minute To Win It, hosted by Campus Ministry Association

Every Monday during fall and spring semesters, Campus Ministry hosts a Dollar Dinner, a place where students can meet other students, join in fellowship, and interact in a faith-guided discussion. Check it out!

Floor Meetings
Various Locations
All residential students are required to attend their designated Floor Meeting. Your Resident Assistant will let you know where your meeting will take place. You will meet your neighbors and RA and discuss residence hall programs and policies.

Campus Rosary, hosted by Campus Ministry Association
Mary Grotto, behind Ireton Hall
Join fellow students in praying a rosary together. This is the first of many weekly rosaries said together as a community.

Speaker Harlan Cohen presents “The Naked Roommate: And Everything Else,” hosted by DISCOVER and the New Student Transitions Office
Lower Level Recreational Gym, Lee Center
Harlan Cohen is a New York Times bestselling author, nationally syndicated advice columnist, and speaker who has visited more than 400 college campuses. He has written several books, including The Naked Roommate: And 107 Other Issues You Might Run Into In College and The Naked Roommate: For Parents Only.

Illusionist-Mentalist Wayne Hoffman, hosted by Campus Programs and Leadership Development
Reinsch Library Auditorium
Wayne Hoffman’s high energy and entertaining magical and psychological feats have been impressing audiences for years, including on the “Ellen DeGeneres Show” and NBC’s “Phenomenon.” Be sure to get there early: this is one of the most popular Welcome Weekend events.
 


Thursday, August 29
8 p.m.
Sex Signals, educational entertainment that examines dating issues; hosted by Campus Programs and Leadership Development, the Counseling Center, the Office of Campus and Residential Services, the Residence Hall Association, and Student Development
Reinsch Library Auditorium
Through the use of humor, improvisation, and audience participation, this program explores how mixed messages, gender role stereotypes, and unrealistic fantasies contribute to misunderstandings between the sexes. Students are thus engaged in a candid discussion on dating, and they are challenged to provide solutions that will better improve communications in interpersonal relationships. All of the performers have extensive training in interactive theater and sexual assault education.

Since the program's inception in 2000, “Sex Signals" has performed more than 1,000 shows at 400-plus colleges and universities, making it one of the country's most popular lecture programs.
