Information for Faculty & Staff

Sometimes a student you are instructing or advising is experiencing personal or emotional problems that are interfering with his/her academic functioning. Sometimes a student engages in unusual or disruptive behavior that interferes with the educational process. These distressed and disruptive students can affect the educational experience of both instructors and students in the classroom.

Faculty and staff members should not feel that they must handle such students on their own. The Counseling Center is staffed by licensed mental health professionals who are available to consult with faculty and staff by phone or in person to assist with

  • Setting appropriate limits with troubled students
  • Clarifying the seriousness of the problem the student is having
  • Planning effective ways to let the student know your concerns regarding his/her behavior
  • Developing a plan to refer the student to available sources of assistance
  • Learning more about University and community resources

Call the Center at (703) 526-6861 or e-mail counselingcenter@marymount.edu to consult with a counselor.
