Workshops & Events

Workshops are a great way to build your career development skills while learning about the latest developments in career exploration and preparation.

Our professional staff offer these interactive workshops to parallel the natural progression of career development activities as described in the four year career development plan.

Because each workshop builds upon the skills developed in the workshop prior to it, students are encouraged to attend all of the workshops that they find relevant to them in their current career development phase. Contact Career Services for more information.

Choosing A Major
Are you unsure what direction to take at Marymount? Having trouble carving out your personal career path? This workshop is for you. You will be introduced to a step-by-step process to assist you as you work through choosing a major. Discover the essential elements of major decision-making, and help get yourself on track with your career/educational goals!

You and Your Career: Self Exploration for Career Satisfaction
The key to unlocking your career path is the creation of a strong foundation of self-knowledge. It will support your educational and career choices. Through self-assessment, this workshop challenges students to consider the four essential elements of the “Career Self” and how these elements impact educational and career choices/experiences. Come and learn how to increase the effectiveness of your educational/career decision-making, uncover personal challenges and strengths, and use your self-knowledge to optimize career satisfaction.

Making College Work
Gain an edge over your job/internship competition and increase your chances of getting that dream job…just by coming to school! This workshop covers everything you need to know about how to transform your time at MU into a comprehensive professional preparation experience. You’ll learn how to strategically plan your time at Marymount to maximize your marketability and give yourself the career boost you need to get ahead come graduation. Make college WORK for you!

Resumes and cover letters are often an employer’s first introduction to who you are as a potential employee. Learn how to make the right impression and get that interview by attending this workshop. It covers the most important elements of constructing, refining, and perfecting your professional documents.

Congratulations, you got an interview! Now what? Getting the interview is only the beginning. Now you have to dazzle that employer and get hired! The most important thing you can do for yourself before going to a job/internship interview is practice. In this workshop, you will learn about the many types of interviews conducted, methods of questioning, and best strategies for preparing for the big day. Employers base their hiring decisions on much more than just your answers to their questions. Find out what employers want to see from you by attending this workshop and set yourself up for success!

Considering Graduate School? The Center for Career Services will be hosting a FREE hour long GRE exam overview class led by a representative from Kaplan Test Prep. At this event, students will:

  • Learn about the format and different sections of the test
  • Get to practice with REAL test questions from each test section
  • Receive helpful study materials and guides from Kaplan Test Prep
  • Gain insight on how to best study and prepare
  • Develop a clear sense of when and how to begin preparing for the graduate school application process

Networking

Do you think online job searching is enough to find your ideal career opportunity? Fact: about 70% of all jobs are obtained through direct person-to-person networking efforts. So what does this mean? It means you need to come to this Career Services workshop and learn the most effective ways to uncover the hidden job-market. You will discover strategies for gaining access to the individuals and opportunities you are looking for by being a proactive professional networker. Learn about the personal pitch, 5Fs of networking, personal branding, using social media, informational interviewing and much more vital information to help you be successful in your job/internship search.

Using Social Media as a Career Tool

Are you a Facebook or Twitter junkie? Addicted to pinning new things on Pinterest? Come to this practical workshop to learn how to turn your digital obsessions into effective career preparation projects and helpful job search tools! This workshop will cover some ways that the most popular social media platforms can be used in a career-strategic way. This workshop will also introduce some helpful new resources and tips that will make networking more fun and easy, and help you stay well informed of new trends and opportunities in your field!

This workshop is essential for all Marymount University students prior to entering an internship. The key to finding and obtaining employment is exhibiting the highest level of professionalism. Sure, your skills, education, and abilities are important to employers. But perhaps even more important is the employer’s actual experience of you in the workplace setting. Come learn the secrets of professional behavior, attitude, and image and set yourself up for long-term career success! Turn that internship into a JOB!

Connecting the Dots: Careers in Entrepreneurship
January 29, 2013; 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.; Ballston Conference Center

Have a million dollar idea? Ever thought of starting your own business? Is the spirit of entrepreneurship within you? Then come to this interactive career panel where four local entrepreneurs will share how they successfully established and continue to maintain and grow their own businesses in the greater Washington, DC, area. Representing a variety of unique industries, each panelist will offer their insight on how to succeed as an entrepreneur and what individuals can be doing NOW to prepare themselves for a career as an entrepreneur. Regardless of what type of business you are thinking of starting, don’t miss out on this great opportunity to network with those who have been through the process and see if you have what it takes.

A special event for seniors only! Believe it or not, your college career is almost over. Have you thought about what's next? At this mini-conference, we'll explore life after Marymount. Participants will have the opportunity to choose from sessions focusing on the job search, graduate school, organizing your personal life, and much more. A catered lunch will be served. Please note that participants must RSVP for this event by February 14 in order to attend.


Connecting the Dots: Careers in the Arts
March 21, 2013; 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.; Reinsch Library Lee Reception Area and Art Gallery

The art industry encompasses a wide and growing variety of potential career paths – what options do you have to choose from and how will you decide which path is right for you? From gallery management and art-education to local community initiatives and nonprofit organizations – five industry professionals will be present to share their career stories and speak about the work they do in their current roles. More importantly, these panelists will be discussing the value of engaging in multiple, meaningful internships as THE way to propel an art career forward. Come network with these individuals and gain valuable information to help you in your internship search!


Connecting the Dots: Careers in the Nonprofit Arena

Passionate about a specific cause, but unsure of how your major fits in to the picture? Interested in dedicating your career to a unique mission while still applying your degree? Washington, DC, is the home of hundreds of nonprofit organizations, all of which represent a wide variety of interests and industries and all of which need individuals with diverse specialties and skills to help out with each aspect of day-to-day operations. Regardless of your major, there is an opportunity for YOU in this field! Come to this panel to learn more about how to find your fit in the nonprofit arena and network with current nonprofit career professionals.
