Dr. Otten sees children’s and adolescent literature as the important intersection of the world view of adults and children. The study of this literature reveals how a boy is the father of a man and a girl the mother of a woman. Dr. Otten approaches the teaching of writing holistically and stresses rhetorical strategies, which produce effective documents. He taught a course called “Banned Books” for the DISCOVER 101 First-Year Seminar class.

Dr. Otten formerly served as an associate vice president for Academic Affairs. In this capacity, he served as an academic advisor to undeclared students, faculty advisor to Delta Epsilon Sigma National Honor Society, and as the University’s Academic Integrity Coordinator. Dr. Otten’s professional activities include service to the College Board and to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
