Women’s Volleyball Splits Tri-match to Open Season
Grantham, Pa. – Marymount University’s women’s volleyball team split a pair of matches to open the 2013 season on Saturday afternoon. The Saints kicked off the year victorious, topping Penn State Fayette 3-1 (11-25, 25-20, 25-15, 26-24) before falling to host Messiah 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-23).
Against the Roaring Lions (0-2), junior Erin Allison led the Saints with 11 kills to go with 17 assists for a double-double. Freshman Emileigh Rettig added eight kills and 24 digs in her collegiate debut.
Senior Brianne Fitzpatrick paced Marymount (1-1) with 27 assists and three service aces. Junior Cassidie Watson collected 14 digs in the win while sophomore Morgan McAlpin was credited with three blocks.
Against the Falcons (2-0), Allison again led the Saints with six kills while McAlpin added five and Emily Shultis had four.
Watson added another 12 digs in the loss while Allison hauled in 10.
Marymount returns to action next weekend as it takes part in the Guetle Volleyball Invitation in Washington, D.C. The Saints will battle the host and former Capital Athletic Conference rival Catholic followed by Eastern Mennonite on Saturday before taking on Misericordia and Swarthmore to close out the tournament on Sunday.
