Arlington, Va. – Marymount University’s men’s lacrosse team fell 14-11 to Capital Athletic Conference rival Mary Washington in the league opener on Saturday afternoon. The Saints fall to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in CAC action.
Connor Kellogg led the Saints with four goals and pair of assists while Danny Carson chipped in a pair of goals. George Pugh, Nico Burns, Mike Quick, Eric Martin and Michael Mene each scored for the Blue and White as well. Ronnie Sanna had a pair of assists off the bench.
David Huson led all players with eight ground balls while Mike Smith added six and Vince Lodato had five. Kellogg and Smith both caused a pair of turnovers for Marymount.
Marymount took the early advantage, scoring three-straight goals over the opening five minutes of the first quarter. The Eagles (5-1, 1-0 CAC) responded by closing out the frame on a 3-1 run to make it a 4-3 contest after one period of action.
In the second, MU outscored Mary Washington 4-1 in the stanza to take an 8-4 lead going into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Saints struck first to take a five goal lead on the opening possession of the second half. Mary Washington would then score nine unanswered goals to lead 13-9 with four minutes remaining.
Consecutive goals by Martin and Kellogg would pull the Saints within a pair but it wouldn’t be enough as UMW held on in the final minutes to seal the victory.
In goal, Ross Fernandez and Derek DiGiovanni split time between the pipes and collected seven saves each.
John Bohlinger led the Eagles with four goals.
Marymount returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to face St. Mary’s (Md.) in CAC play.
