Cross Country Opens Season at Sea Gull Opener
Salisbury, Md. – Marymount University’s men’s and women’s cross country teams opened the 2013 campaign at the Sea Gull Opener on Saturday. The Saints women’s squad posted an impressive fourth place finish while the men’s team finished 10th overall.
Marymount’s fourth place finish on the women’s side is the best finish in program history at a meet with at least 10 opponents. Facing mixed division competition, the Saints finished third among all D-III schools and beat Capital Athletic Conference foes Salisbury, St. Mary’s (Md.) and Wesley.
Melissa Teeple paced the Saints in her team debut, finishing in 12th place with a time of 22:59.08. Fellow newcomer Elizabeth Long finished 47th at 25:12.15 to edge sophomore Payton Bodecker, who was 51st with a time of 25:22.67.
Sarah Cotsonas was 60th at 25:32.90, Charlotte Knopf was 85th at 27:46.11, Katie Maloney placed 90th at 28:31.03 and Jessica Butler rounded out the Saints scoring in 92nd place with a time of 28:35.77.
On the men’s side, the Saints were paced by a pair of freshmen making their collegiate debuts. Collin Chartier ran a 29:38.98 to finish 74th and edge teammate Carlos Elizondo who posted a 29:46.24 to finish 77th.
Kevin Farmer placed 97th with a time of 31:59.81, Lavelle Perry was 115th at 38:16.18 and Matt Ward rounded out the Saints scoring in 116th place with a time of 38:23.60.
Marymount returns to action in two weeks at the Coach Achtzen Classic in York, Pa., on September 14th.
