Saturday, March 16, 2013
Arlington, Va. – Marymount University’s men’s lacrosse team won its third-straight game with a 13-6 victory over visiting Southwestern on Saturday afternoon. The winning-streak is the longest for the Saints since 2006 as they improve to 4-1 on the season and an undefeated 3-0 at home at Long Bridge Park.

Seven different Saints scored on the afternoon including five players with multiple goals. Connor Kellogg led the Blue and White with three goals for a hat-trick and added an assist.

Vince Lodato, Nico Burns, Andrew Fournier and Lance Bernecker each added two goals apiece while Michael Mene and Jimmy Wendell chipped in lone goals as well.

Jack Burke, George Pugh, Lodato and Mene each recorded a pair of assists while Garrett Nealon and Michael Stidham added one each.

Marymount opened the scoring on its first possession with a goal from Burns 30 seconds into the game. Kellogg added another at the 10:29 mark before Southwestern (4-6) responded with a man-up goal just over a minute later. Kellogg knocked home his second goal with 6:20 remaining in the first quarter while the Pirates looked to keep things close with a goal of their own at the 3:30 mark to close out the opening frame down just 3-2.

The Saints controlled the second quarter, outscoring SU 3-0 in the stanza with man-up goals from Burns and Lodato and an even-strength score from Fournier. Lodato’s man-up goal with 44 seconds left in the half gave Marymount a 6-2 lead going into the break.

Coming out of halftime Lodato added another man-up goal, the eventual game-winner, to open the scoring before Southwestern responded with two goals to pull within three down 7-4. The Saints would answer back with four unanswered goals that spanned the end of the third and start of the fourth quarters.

Marymount then outscored the Pirates 4-2 in the fourth to seal the win.

With 11:30 of penalty time combined between both teams, Marymount took advantage of its man-up situations while holding SU at bay with its man-down defense. The Saints converted on 4-of-6 extra man opportunities while holding the Pirates to just two goals on eight extra man chances.

Marymount’s defense continued to be stingy, holding Southwestern scoreless for spans of 21:56 and 14:21 in the game. The Saints caused 12 of the Pirates 23 turnovers with Max Rowse leading the way with three.

Max Johnson was sharp at the middle ‘X’, winning 11 of his 17 faceoff matchups. He led all players with six ground balls while Nick Gruber and Rowse both had five.

In goal, Derek DiGiovanni (4-1) earned his fourth win of the season with a 13 save performance between the pipes. He added three grounds balls and a caused turnover in the victory.
