Newport News, Va. – Six Marymount University student-athletes were named to the 2011 Virginia Sports Information Directors Association Academic All-State Team, as announced on Friday. Seniors Tom Anderson, Amanda Billy, Lori Renner, Graham Sutherland and Brian Tinsman, along with junior Anna Macedonia, collected the award for the Saints.
A total of 174 student-athletes from 29 Virginia colleges and universities earned the accolade. Each school was allowed to nominate six deserving student-athletes who were at least a sophomore and had a minimum of a 3.2 grade point average for the honor. The team includes all levels of college athletics in Virginia.
Anderson (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown HS) was a four-year letterwinner for the men’s lacrosse team and earned Capital Athletic Conference All-Academic honors each year with the Saints. He was named the 2010 Linda McMahon Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year at Marymount as a junior and the 2011 Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice’s Student of the Year as a senior, given to the top student in that field of study. Anderson posted a 3.65 cumulative grade point average and graduated with a degree in criminal justice with a minor in sociology.
Billy (Syracuse, N.Y. / Christian Brothers Academy) spent four years on the hardwood with the women’s basketball team. An All-CAC performer and conference champion on the floor, she was also a standout in the classroom as well. Billy collected CAC All-Academic honors all four years with the Saints and was twice named Academic All-District by the College Sports Information Directors of America. She posted a 3.57 GPA and graduated with a degree in mathematics.
Renner (Columbus, Ga. / Columbus HS) was a two-sport athlete with the Saints, playing three years of volleyball and four years of women’s lacrosse. She collected a total of seven CAC All-Academic accolades and was the president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee as both a junior and a senior. Renner posted a 3.67 GPA and graduated with a degree in communications.
Sutherland (Shenandoah, W.Va. / Jefferson HS) was the anchor to the men’s soccer team’s defense. Another four-year CAC All-Academic performer, he impressively recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA during his final season of eligibility. Sutherland posted a 3.71 cumulative GPA and graduated with a degree in biology.
Tinsman (Seaford, Del. / The Learning Center) is the only two-time VaSID Academic All-State selection for Marymount. An All-Conference performer for the men’s swimming team, he also earned CAC All-Academic honors each year in the pool for the Saints. Tinsman capped his career by earning the 2011 Linda McMahon Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year as a senior. He posted a 3.84 GPA and graduated with a degree in communications.
The lone junior to garner VaSID Academic All-State honors, Macedonia (Arlington, Va. / Bishop O’Connell HS) adds yet another accolade to her impressive season. The CAC Women’s Swimmer of the Year and NCAA Honorable Mention All-American, she also collected three-straight CAC All-Academic awards and was tabbed the 2011 Linda McMahon Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year as a junior. Macedonia has posted a 3.84 GPA to date and is on pace to graduate next year with a degree in art education.
VaSID was formed in 1983, and is comprised of sports information professionals from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and independent institutions from the state of Virginia. The purpose of the organization is to promote college athletics at all four-year institutions.
