Men’s Swimming Drops Season Opener
Arlington, Va. – Marymount University’s men’s swimming team dropping its season-opening Capital Athletic Conference meet 137.5-66.5 to visiting St. Mary’s (Md.) on Saturday afternoon.
Opening the day with a victory, Matthew Essig, Joseph Gardner, Robert Klazynski and Tyler Hayes teamed to post a 1:43.63 in the 200 medley relay. Klazynski then followed up with a third place showing on the 1000 freestyle and a second place showing in the 100 butterfly.
Jonathan Nguyen and Essig went 1-2 in the 200 freestyle with times of 1:52.84 and 1:53.29, respectively, with Nguyen just .11 of a second from victory. James Gibbons then follow suit with a 23.62 in the 50 freestyle to tie for the win in the event before finishing third in the 100 butterfly.
Gardner posted his first top-three finish individually in the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.93 before placing second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.71. Hayes would place third in the 100 freestyle in 54.40 before Essig finished second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.65. Nguyen closed out the individual events with a third place finish in the 500 freestyle.
Closing out the day, Gibbons, Nguyen, Tristin Irwin and Joe Paris would post a 1:39.41 to finish second in the 200 freestyle relay.
Marymount returns to action next Saturday as it hosts York (Pa.) in CAC competition.
