Saturday, April 07, 2012
Arlington, Va. – Marymount University’s women’s lacrosse team moved one step closer to securing a berth to the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament with a 13-12 victory over visiting Frostburg State on Saturday afternoon. The Saints move to 4-7 overall and even their league record to 3-3 on the year.

Tancy Weatherford led the Saints with a game-high four goals while Megan McGuirk added a hat-trick with three. Taylor Johnson, Molly Maher, Lindsay Quinn, Catherine Powell, Cecilia Pasquale and Jackie Belker each scored for the Blue and White as well.

A highly competitive first half saw seven ties and eight lead changes without either team able to go up by any more than one goal.

The Bobcats (4-9, 2-4 CAC) struck first in the second frame, taking the first multiple-goal lead of the game to go up 9-7 after the opening possession. Frostburg would eventually take claim an 11-8 advantage after six minutes of action.

Marymount battled back, scoring three unanswered goals from Weatherford, Johnson and McGuirk to knot things up at 11-11 with 12 minutes to play. The Bobcats retook the lead at the 6:51 mark but the Saints responded almost immediately with Maher’s goal 25 seconds later.

Looking to put the game away, MU looked to be in trouble as it went a man-down with 5:37 remaining. Unfazed, Pasquale hit home the eventual game-winner with a shorthanded goal just 28 seconds later while the Saints defense did the rest by holding FSU at bay the remainder of the game.

Kiki Niebuhr collected 13 saves in goal for the win.

Malory Brunett and Katelyn Kesecker led the Bobcats with three goals each.

Marymount returns to action on Wednesday as it hosts CAC foe Salisbury to Long Bridge Park.
