Volleyball Splits Tri-Match
Arlington, Va. – Marymount University’s volleyball team split a pair of matches as it hosted a tri-match on Saturday afternoon. The Saints dropped a Capital Athletic Conference contest 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-18) to Frostburg State before regrouping to defeat Washington (Md.) College 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 18-25, 27-25) later in the day.
Sharda Braxton led all players with 14 kills in the win while Johanna Hummel added 10. Melissa Warren paced the offense with 37 assists to go with 13 digs for a double-double.
Chelsea Gates and Brianne Fitzpatrick also had solid defensive games, posting 13 and 18 digs, respectively.
Marymount dominated the Shorewomen in the first two games, outhitting Washington in both sets while notching a sharp 13 kills in each frame.
The Shorewomen bounced back in the third to avoid the sweep.
In the fourth set, Marymount battled back from a set point at 24-23 to force the stanza into extra points. Kills by Braxton gave the Saints match point at 25-24 and 26-25 before an attack error ended the upstart Shorewomen’s comeback attempt.
In the loss to Frostburg State, Braxton again led the Saints with nine kills while Warren had 25 assists and Gates added 12 digs.
Marymount returns to action on Wednesday, October 6, at home against Hood at 7 p.m. The CAC match will serve as the Saints’ DIG PINK event to raise money for breast cancer research and awareness.
