Triathlon Excels in Program Debut
Williamsburg, Va. – Marymount University’s triathlon team had an impressive showing in the program’s inaugural event at the Patriots Sprint Tri on Sunday. The Saints posted top finishes in the first Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Conference event of the season including an individual victory on the women’s side.
Melissa Teeple placed first overall in the collegiate female wave with a time of 1:06:29. She was also second overall among all 205 participants in all age groups.
Starting off with a time of 9:55 in the 750 meter swim, Teeple put distance between herself and the pack after an impressive showing on the bike and posting a 34:54 on the 20K course. She then followed that up with the best 5K time of the day at 19:04 to secure the win.
On the men’s side, freshman Collin Chartier posted a 1:00:17 to finish third overall in the collegiate flight and fifth overall among all 503 participants in all age groups. He was the second out of the water after posting a time of 8:05 before biking a 32:06 and a 17:24 on the road.
Fellow freshman Carlos Elizondo finished 20th in the collegiate group in 1:05:43 after putting on the afterburners during the run with a time of 17:54.
Closing out the participants, senior Matt Ward crossed the finish line in 1:17:06 during his first collegiate triathlon.
Marymount returns to action on September 14 at the Bellows Lake Triathlon in Greensboro, N.C.
