Salisbury, Md. – Marymount University’s women’s basketball team avenged an earlier season loss with a 54-52 victory over Salisbury in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night. With the win, the Saints salvaged a series split with the Sea Gulls and picked up a key win for the possible opportunity to host the opening round of the upcoming league tournament.
Katelyn Fischer led the Saints (8-12, 5-6 CAC) with 18 points while Julie Tomesheski posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Sam Spencer chipped in nine points and Dominique Dickens added seven points, seven assists and five rebounds.
Trailing by five with 40 seconds remaining, the Saints used a combination of tactical guile and offensive execution to pull off the comeback. A clutch three-pointer by Spencer with 27 seconds on the clock cut the Marymount deficit to just 52-50 but MU had only had four team fouls countered by no shot clock for the Sea Gulls (11-8, 8-3 CAC).
Purposely picking up three personal fouls in succession without giving up much time, the Saints put Salisbury on the line shooting one-and-one with 17 seconds to go. After the Sea Gulls missed on the front end of the attempts, Fischer hauled down the rebound and went coast-to-coast for the tying lay-up while picking up the and-one foul. Knocking down the free throw for the 53-52 lead, Fischer then all but sealed the win for MU with a steal on the ensuing possession and closing things out on the line.
A tight opening frame saw three early lead changes before the Saints took control and claimed a 24-21 lead going into the break. Marymount dominated play in the paint in the stanza, outscoring the Sea Gulls 20-10 down low in the frame.
Katie McGahagan led Salisbury with a game-high 19 points while Ann Hackett added 11.
Marymount returns to the hardwood on Saturday in a showdown for fourth place in the CAC standings against St. Mary’s (Md.). Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. and fans can follow the action live by logging on to www.marymount.edu/athletics/wBasketball and selecting the “live stats” link.
