Volleyball Earns First CAC Victory
Arlington, Va. – Marymount University’s volleyball team earned its first Capital Athletic Conference win of the season with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 27-25) victory over visiting Hood on Wednesday night. The Saints and Chargers used the contest as their Dig Pink match to help raise awareness and knowledge about breast cancer.
Sharda Braxton led the Saints (6-13, 1-4 CAC) with a match-high 15 kills and hit at a sizzling .480 clip from the outside. Michelle McCormick added seven kills at a stellar .545 attack percentage, Courtny Carroll chipped in six kills and Maria Shockman had five.
Defensively, Chelsea Gates paced the Saints with 11 digs while Brianne Fitzpatrick chimed in with 10. Marymount held the Chargers (5-9, 0-5 CAC) to a meager .086 hitting percentage while only one Hood player had more than three kills.
The Saints blasted HC in the first frame with 15 kills at a .591 clip. Marymount used an early run of 10-1 to pull away and claim the opening set.
An even first few rotations of the second set saw the Saints leading11-10 before MU closed out the frame 14-3 behind four kills each by McCormick and Braxton.
In the third, the Chargers wouldn’t back down and forced the match into extra points. Hood battled off three MU match points but couldn’t hold off the Saints as Johanna Hummel and Braxton put the match away with back-to-back kills.
Marymount returns to action on Friday with a pair of matches in Baltimore, Md. The Saints take on Goucher at 3 p.m. before facing CAC foe Stevenson in non-league play at 5 p.m.
