Wesley Rallies Past Men’s Basketball
Arlington, Va. – Marymount University’s men’s basketball team fell to visiting Wesley 68-61 in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night.
Three Saints (3-14, 1-7 CAC) scored in double figures in the loss. Junior forward Tarek Ammoury led all scorers with 20 points while freshman Reed Scott added 17 and junior John Magnani chipped in 10. Ammoury also led the Saints with seven rebounds while Magnani had three blocks.
Marymount outshot the Wolverines (11-6, 7-1 CAC) 52.1 percent to 42.6 percent but were undone by 19 turnovers that equated to 30 Wesley points.
A back-and-forth first half saw four ties and seven lead changes before the Saints began to pull away. Marymount posted a 10 point lead in the frame on an Andrew Somuah free throw before eventually taking a 35-28 advantage into halftime on a buzzer-beating putback from Scott.
The Saints would go up by as many as 12 in the second stanza before Wesley began to methodically chip away at the MU lead. A pair of free throws by Chris Douglas on two separate trips knotted the game and gave WC the lead before a Rudy Thomas trifecta put the Wolverines up for good with just under four minutes to play. Wesley wouldn’t hit another field goal the rest of the way and closed out the win on the charity stripe.
Paul Reynolds and Kevin Johnson led the Wolverines with 16 points and eight rebounds each. Thomas added 13 points off the bench and Douglas chipped in 12.
Marymount returns to the hardwood on Saturday on the road in CAC action at York (Pa.).
