Men’s Basketball Falls to Goucher in Triple Overtime
Towson, Md. – Marymount University’s men’s basketball team dropped an 88-84 triple-overtime heartbreaker on the road at Goucher on Saturday night.
Senior guard Stephen Simoneau led all scorers with 28 points while freshmen Keenan Brown and Reed Scott added 12 points each. Scott pulled down a game-high 14 points for a double-double in the loss.
A highly competitive first half saw a multitude of ties and lead changes for the first 20 minutes of action. The Saints (1-8) would lead by as many as nine in the stanza on a Bryan DeBruin field goal halfway through the frame.
Goucher (2-4) battled back, slowly chipping away at the MU advantage before retaking the lead with 2:35 to play in the half. The Saints would get the last shot off as Andrew Somuah’s jumper in the paint put Marymount up 38-36 going into the break.
Things stayed within two possessions the entire second half. The Gophers would go up by as many as four and MU leading by as many as five with just over five minutes to play. Goucher knotted the score at 64-64 with 2:12 remaining in regulation as neither team would score again to force overtime.
Brown converted a free throw with 1:20 to play in the first overtime to demand a second. He then nailed a three-pointer in the second overtime to cap a 10-2 run before the Gophers responded with a field goal with 17 seconds remaining to force a third overtime at 76-76.
Goucher kicked off the third OT on a 5-0 run and led by as many as eight in the frame en route to the victory.
Marymount returns to action on Sunday, December 19, at home against The College of New Jersey.
