Women’s Hoops Outlasts Salisbury in Overtime Thriller

Wednesday, January 22, 2014
Arlington, Va. – Marymount University’s women’s basketball team defeated visiting Capital Athletic Conference foe Salisbury 63-57 in overtime on Wednesday night. The Saints improve to 10-6 on the season and 6-2 in league play.

Katelyn Fischer led the Saints with 19 points to go with six assists and four rebounds. With her six dimes, she eclipsed the 500 assist mark for her career – the only Marymount player to achieve the feat.

Kievanna Lacey added 13 points for the Blue and White while Miranda Krott and Aliya Roseborough hauled in eight rebounds each.

In overtime, Fischer showed why she is one of the top players in the nation and put the game on her shoulders. The senior guard scored 12 of Marymount’s 13 points in the frame and nearly doubled Salisbury’s scoring in the period. Fischer knocked down the first basket in overtime, a three-pointer, and then nailed another trifecta to give MU the lead with under a minute to play after SU tied things up. She went on to convert 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch to seal the win for Marymount.

A low scoring first half teetered back-and-forth before Salisbury took a 10-8 lead midway through the frame. The Sea Gulls led the rest of the period but couldn’t pull away despite hitting four three-pointers. Kiki Laux came up big for Marymount and scored the Saints’ final three points of the first half at the free throw line to head into halftime down just 23-19.

Salisbury (9-7, 5-3 CAC) came out of the break looking for separation against the Saints and pushed their lead to two-possessions off the bat before leading 39-28 with 12 minutes to play. Marymount slowly began to chip away at the Sea Gull lead and managed to tie things up again at 44-44 over the next seven minutes courtesy of a 16-5 run capped by an Adomako put-back.

Both squads would trade leads and force ties another four times in the final five minutes before a pair of Salisbury free throws with 26 seconds remaining would end up forcing overtime.

Sarah Seipp led the Sea Gulls with a game-high 22 points.

Marymount returns to action on Saturday as begins the second half of CAC competition at home against St. Mary’s (Md.). Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. and fans can follow the action live by logging on to livestats.prestosports.com/Marymount.
