Ashland, Va. – Marymount University’s men’s and women’s swimming teams both placed third overall at the Randolph-Macon Invitational over the weekend. The Saints men’s squad posted a score of 351 to best four other programs while the women’s team topped six opponents with a score of 512.
For the men, the Saints kicked things off with a fourth place performance in the 200 freestyle relay. Greg Shumaker, Matt Ward, Nigel Patterson and Will Baroz posted a time of 1:36.67 in the event.
Tom Baroz went on to place ninth in the 500 freestyle in 5:14.89, Joseph Gardner was sixth in the 200 IM at 2:10.81 while the 400 medley relay team placed fifth as Ward, Gardner, Tom Baroz and Shumaker posted a time of 3:59.31. The foursome then went on the place sixth in the 200 medley relay at 1:47.31.
Tom Baroz finished ninth in the 200 freestyle in 1:51.76, Gardner was seventh in the 100 breaststroke at 1:04.45 and the team of Gardner, Ward, Dennis D’Abbraccio and Tom Baroz placed fourth in the 800 freestyle relay at 7:54.51. Ward and D’Abbraccio both posted solid finishes in the 1650 freestyle, placing fourth and fifth, respectively.
Gardner and Shumaker went sixth and ninth in the 200 breaststroke before Tom Baroz finished fourth in the 200 butterfly in 2:06.82.
The Saints wrapped up the meet with a fourth place finish in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:31.12 from Shumaker, Gardner, Tom Baroz and Will Baroz.
On the women’s side, the Saints opened action with a fifth place finish in the 200 freestyle as the team of Casey Thomas, Katie Moran, Jackie Finn and Lea Mazzaccoli posted a time of 1:47.72.
Other highlights included Moran placing second in the 50 freestyle at 25.19, the team of Lauren Funk, Emily Wagner, Bridget Wunderly and Casey Thomas finishing fourth in the 400 medley relay in 4:19.64 and Kim Rizzo, Wagner, Wunderly and Moran placing third in the 200 medley relay in 1:57.59.
Rizzo was also fourth overall in the 400 IM at 4:53.22 while Wunderly placed third in the 100 butterfly in 1:01.32. Wagner added another third place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:13.52.
The Saints team of Moran, Katie Scott, Wunderly and Thomas finished second in the 800 freestyle relay in 8:14.75 while Moran and Thomas placed third and fifth, respectively, in the 100 freestyle.
Wagner added another-top-five finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:39.43 before Wunderly placed fourth in the 200 butterfly in 2:19.23.
The Saints closed out the weekend with a second place finish in the 400 freestyle relay as Moran, Rizzo, Wunderly and Thomas posted a 3:46.41.
Marymount returns to action after the New Year as it hosts Randolph-Macon in a dual meet on Saturday, January 12.
