Volleyball Splits Tri-Match
Arlington, Va. – Marymount University’s volleyball team split a tri-match against visiting Lycoming and Moravian on Saturday afternoon. The Saints topped the Warriors 3-1 (28-26, 25-22, 23-25, 25-20) before falling to the Greyhounds 3-2 (26-24, 23-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-10) in the nightcap.
Sharda Braxton paced the Saints (10-19) with 19 kills in the opener, hitting at a stellar .567 clip from the outside. Michelle McCormick added 12 kills while Johanna Hummel had 11. Setter Melissa Warren paced the offense with a match-high 42 assists.
Defensively, Chelsea Gates collected 14 digs while Hummel rejected four attempts.
The Saints continued to put up impressive numbers against the Greyhounds but couldn’t convert them into a win. Braxton was solid again, notching 17 kills to lead the MU while McCormick recorded nine kills and Hanna House had five, neither without committing an error.
Warren picked up a season-high 49 assists. Her previous best was 45.
Defensively, Gates added another 25 digs while McCormick had 23. House earned five blocks in the loss.
Marymount returns to action on Wednesday, October 27, in Capital Athletic Conference play against rival Mary Washington. The match will serve as ‘Senior Night’ for the Saints’ lone senior Gates.
