Men’s Soccer Wins CAC Opener
Arlington, Va. – Marymount University’s men’s soccer team won its Capital Athletic Conference opener with a 2-1 victory over visiting St. Mary’s (Md.) at Long Bridge Park on Saturday afternoon. The Saints even their record to 2-2-2 overall and are 1-0-0 in league play.
Battling down the stretch tied at 1-1, the Saints drew a St. Mary’s foul just outside the box to set up a free kick with only 1:24 remaining in regulation. Centered in the middle of the box, junior Onar Yousefi launched a perfectly lofted ball over the Seahawks (2-5-0, 0-1-0 CAC) wall and into the upper right corner for the game-winner.
Down by 1-0 at the half, the Saints evened the game in the 72nd minute as Reid McKee put home a point blank shot from in front of the goal with assists by Jorge Alvarado and JC Cabrera.
St. Mary’s scored early to take a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute on a goal by Rickie Kalama.
After allowing the initial goal, the Saints settled in a negated most of SMC’s offensive production. Marymount keeper Mike Madigan collected five saves on the day as the MU defense held its guests to just three shots in the second frame.
Marymount returns to action on Wednesday at Salisbury in CAC competition.
