Katelyn Fischer Named DIIINews Preseason Player of the Year
Beaverton, Ore. – Marymount University women’s basketball standout Katelyn Fischer has been tabbed as the DIIINews Preseason Player of the Year, as announced on Wednesday. As a team, the Saints are eighth in the preseason top-25 poll.
Fischer, the two-time reigning Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year, is also a two-time All-American by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.
In 2012-13, Fischer collected three All-America accolades on the year after being recognized by the WBCA, D3Hoops.com and DIIINews. She was also named the VaSID Player of the Year, First Team Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America and was a finalist for the prestigious Jostens Trophy, awarded to the top Division III men’s and women’s basketball player in the nation.
Fischer averaged 16.4 points, 5.3 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 3.2 steals per game while shooting at a 46.7 percent clip from the floor last year. She was also one of the national leaders in three-point shooting at 42 percent.
The Saints play three games against teams ranked in the top-10 of the preseason poll including hosting top-ranked Montclair State and a home-and-home series against CAC newcomer No. 6 Christopher Newport.
Marymount posted a 24-5 record, its 12th CAC championship and 17th appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2012-13. In addition to Fischer’s repeat performance as Player of the Year, head coach Ashlee Courter was tabbed the league’s Coach of the Year. The Saints return eight letterwinners from a year ago.
