Men’s Hoops Outlasts CAC Newcomer Southern Virginia
Buena Vista, Va. – Marymount University’s men’s basketball team won an 83-82 come-from-behind victory over Capital Athletic Conference newcomer Southern Virginia on Tuesday evening. The Saints improve to 4-1 on the season but the game does not count in the league standings because Southern Virginia is in its final year of NCAA provisional status.
Reed Scott led all players with 22 points and nine rebounds while Antonio Rouse added 19 points and JC Hoellich chipped in 13 points and nine boards.
Marymount found itself down by seven points with just under 2:30 to play in the game. An old-fashioned three-point play by Michael Anderson cut the deficit to three on the next possession before Jesse Konadu countered a pair of Knights free throws with a three-pointer to pull within three at 82-79 with 1:38 to play.
The Saints defense would hold on during the next possession leading to Scott converting a jumper with an assist from Anderson on the next trip down the court. Anderson then hauled in the rebound on the next SVU trip down the court, feeding Konadu on the outlet for a fast break basket to put Marymount up one with 35 ticks left on the clock for what would be the eventual game-winner.
Preston Eaton led Southern Virginia with 21 points.
Marymount returns to action on Sunday as it hosts former CAC foe Goucher to the friendly confines of the Verizon Sports Arena. Tip-Off is set for 3 p.m. and fans can follow the action live by logging on to www.marymount.edu/athletics/mBasketball and selecting the “live stats” and “live video” links.
