Author Richard Ford will read from his novel The Sportswriter
(1986, Random House), the first in his Bascombe trilogy. The second novel in the trilogy, Independence Day
(1995, Knopf), won both the PEN/Faulkner Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
After the reading, Mr. Ford will take questions from the audience. A book signing and reception will follow in the Lee Reception Room. Copies of his book will be available at the book signing.The Sportswriter
has been described as “A book of pitiless, truth-telling, at once cruel and full of comfort” by New York
magazine. The New York Times
said, “Ford is writing about modern uncommitted man, lashing himself to the railing of mundane daily life, trying to get through the storm.” Ford has been widely published in The New Yorker
The reading portion of this event is open primarily to Marymount students in the EN 102 course. The book signing and reception are open to the greater community.
