Internships
Senior Paralegal Studies majors gain field experience with a cooperating law firm, corporation, or government agency in the Washington metropolitan area. The experience is monitored by the Paralegal Studies program director. Students choose an internship site, but the site must be approved by the program director.
The internship’s main objective is to give students an opportunity to apply classroom learning to a practical setting. The internship also builds a student’s résumé.
During the internship, students perform paralegal tasks under the supervision of licensed attorneys at various legal organizations, including
-
Washington area law firms ranging in size from those with more than 350 attorneys to small boutique firms
-
legal departments of large corporations and companies
-
various departments within the U.S. government
Careers
Marymount graduates will be prepared to face a robust job market.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Employment of paralegals and legal assistants is projected to grow 28 percent between 2008 and 2018, much faster than the average for all occupations. Employers are trying to reduce costs and increase the availability and efficiency of legal services by hiring paralegals to perform tasks once done by lawyers. Paralegals are performing a wider variety of duties, making them more useful to businesses.”
Graduates of Marymount’s Paralegal Studies program are equipped for careers in the legal field, including
-
paralegals
-
legal assistants
